Intercountry adoption

ARC Adoption North East is registered with Ofsted to provide inter-country adoption services.

We do this through a national partnership with the Intercountry Adoption Centre Regional Adoption Agency (IACRAA), which as well as ARC Adoption includes the Inter Country Adoption Centre (IAC) the Centre for Adoption, Nugent Adoption and Adoption Matters.

Intercountry Adoption Centre (IAC) are the lead agency in the Inter-country Adoption Regional Adoption Agency and are able to offer services to prospective adopters in many areas of the UK.

The Intercountry Adoption Centre acts as a national hub providing information, advice and training for prospective inter country adopters; and taking them through stage one of the assessment process.

When applicants are ready to enter stage two of the process, the assessment may be carried out by one of the other partner agencies in the partnership determined by where the applicants are located.

If you are considering inter-country adoption contact your local authority, as they have a legal responsibility to either provide this service or make provision for it through working with the IACRAA, or you can ring the IAC advice line in the first instance who will guide you towards the most appropriate action to take.

Gillian and Ryan's story - adopting sisters

How adoption works

Adoption is a way of providing new families for children who cannot be looked after by their birth parents and need to belong to a new family.

Matching panel

Once the family finding process is complete the match will need to be agreed formally by the adoption panel for the child’s agency. If approval is recommended by the adoption panel for the match, the child’s adoption agency decision maker then makes the final decision.
How long does the UK adoption process take?
Early Permanence

With Early Permanence adoption, prospective adopters are also temporarily approved as foster carers so they can provide early stability and continuity of care to a baby, child or siblings who they may go on to adopt.

Initial visit

Following your initial enquiry, if you would like to progress with the adoption process a member of ARC Adoption North East’s team will visit you in your home. The initial visit will be very informal and take place at a date and time that is convenient for you and will last about two hours. It’s an opportunity to have your questions answered in more detail and help the team get to know you better.
